Why could obama not answer the young lads question about jihad?

In Obama's book, "The Audacity of Hope" Obama said that he will always stand with his Muslim brothers in times of trouble. I don't think anyone would stand with their Muslim brothers unless they were Muslim. He's okay with jihad.
