Was talking to a guy who is going through a divorce stupid on my behalf?

I've liked him from afar for almost 2 years now, but never really talked to him because I knew he was married. A couple weeks ago he started flirting with me big time, and we got to know each other better. I found out that he is going through a divorce right now, but he hasn't seen/spoken to his soon to be ex wife in months. But he told me that he would definitely get married again and he wants kids someday, so he was looking for a serious relationship. He was very into me, we told each other everything about ourselves, we got very close and we slept together. A week later he told me he can't do this right now because he has a lot going on in his life right now. So now I'm just so upset. I probably shouldn't have gotten as close as I did with him knowing his situation, but I got my hopes up because I've really liked him for a while. Is this a hopeless situation? Should I let him be and see if he changes his mind and contacts me? What should I do?
