TSA-carry ons........?

I'm going out of town tonight and I needed to know the new rules for carry-ons, I looked on TSA's website and they said we were allowed to have small toiletries now, but can we have actual carry-on bags like backpacks? also the list didn't say anything about books. after the J.K. Rowling thing I dont know if we can have books or not...? Anyone that can help..thanks!
