What movie did Christoph Waltz leave?

I read an article a few months ago that Christoph Waltz turned down a role for a movie in order to star in Water for Elephants. At the time I was upset, thinking he was perfect for the role he turned down, but now I'm reading Water for Elephants and realize he made a good choice. Does anyone know what movie/role he left?
