Proper etiquette for a "gay marriage" discussion?

Proper etiquette would have been either to smile and say nothing, or simply say congratulations. You weren't out of line for being 'honest'...but you WERE out of line for being cruel and judgemental when it wasn't necessary. There were probably 1,000 ways you could have voiced your opinion in more nonconfrontational way...and I think you know that.
