"Line in" doesn't work on Acer Laptop?

Does anyone know if there are settings you need to adjust on a new Acer Aspire 5100 series laptop to get the line in to work. It's brand new, running Windows Vista Premium--my son wanted to do some recording but the line in, in the front of it doesn't seem to work--can't find any adjustments. tks
