How are meiosis and fertilization related?

Meiosis is how gametes are formed. During meiosis, the chromosome number of the organism is halved, so that just one of the two copies of each gene is in a cell. When fertilization occurs, two gametes are fused, so the embryo that is the result once again has two copies of each gene.
